I agree. I started out as an assembly language programmer on 8-bit micros back in the 80s, right down at the bare metal. I moved on to higher level programming fairly soon after that. Having some understanding of what is going on at the low level is a mixed blessing. It can be useful, but I often have to stop myself thinking to hard about how some high level feature works, rather than just using it.
