It would be nice, I agree. At the moment I get around this by converting my formulas to PNG images, using a bit of Python code (that shells out to latex and dvipng on the command line).

I've written about 100 articles, so I've kind of got used to doing things this way. But now I'm writing a book in LaTeX it is just so, so much easier to enter the formula directly.
