I've written a few technical books, which I suppose are slightly different, but I tend to agree with you. I've made more sales via Leanpub than Amazon.

It's a similar situation, Leanpub generate a few organic sales but you mainly need to bring your own audience.

Still worth adding them to Amazon, but I typically only sell a handful of copies a month on there.
